Oh, I've done that with a book (set it down and had someone else pick it up and read a bit in shock), and it's like, "Why should I have to DEFEND what I'm reading??"

I had a bit of a chortle of empathy.

Number two was something that I'd struggled with not too long ago. I think (hope, pray) that NaNoWriMo cured me of that habit-- if anything would, that would be the event. Still, it's hard to read back and note dead-end scenes and characters introduced but never used.

All of this is pretty good advice-- You should have heard the squeak I made when I heard that about 90% of Neil Gaiman's first draft went unchanged by the time it was published. Or noted some of the crazy authors online that seem to be able to write an average of three thousand words a day.

@Jinx - Thank you for the insight! The fact that Cora is more clearly defined in the three sentence description on the site rather than the first chapter certainly means I'll be revisiting the edit. The translation from what's dancing around in my brain vs. what's put on paper and what a reader perceives is a challenge, but with help from keen eyes like yours, I think I can do it better.

I read the first three chapters of the book today. Nice beginning. I like the world you've set up, pleasantly original and complex. I also really like your accents and use of dialogue. I can practically hear the characters talking just in the way they speak.

My only - quite minor - qualms were that your description of Cora here and the way she's presented in the book seem to be somewhat at odds with each other. She really didn't strike me as bookish in the story, nor so much romantic - I didn't get that impression from her, though the potential is there. It's not a major issue, as long as you keep consistent within the story, but having read the character bios first, I was expecting a somewhat different character than I found. I also noticed more than a few proofreading errors, though those are of course excusable for now.

I did enjoy the chapters posted here and I'm certainly intrigued. You've certainly captured my interest and I look forward to reading more.

We move on. Sometimes recognizing that you'll only get so far with some folks means you can go further on your own. If that makes sense.

Hear, hear. I'm sorry you have troubles with your family - and others, as mentioned in your comment on May 29th, yeesh - but I am somewhat relieved I'm not the only one. I have not received open dissent from people I know for what I write, but they just don't "get" it. For the record, I fully agree with you. I simply find going to another world more engaging.

Hey Natania,

I remember seeing one or two posts of yours about Tor's experiment releasing free ebooks. I got a chance recently to talk to several Tor authors and asked them whether the ebook releases boosted sales. My article on the subject was posted over here:

Anyway, I thought this was something you and your readers might find interesting.

Take care,
Simon
